Getting ready for the TEF exam and unsure how to approach Section B of the written expression? This section tests your ability to present and support a point of view—and we’re here to help you tackle it with confidence.
Section B: More Than Just a “Letter”
Although Section B is often referred to as the “letter” task, writing in a formal letter format is not required. What really matters is your ability to develop a clear argument.
You’ll have 35 minutes to express whether you agree or disagree with a given statement and support your position with examples and justifications.
📝 Check out the official tutorial and the TEF preparation workshop to get familiar with the task format.

How to Start Your Argument
Start with a simple, direct introduction to save time and stay focused. Here are some example openers:
“I read in your newspaper the following opinion: ‘[quote].’ I completely disagree because…”
“In response to the article stating that [rephrase], I would like to express my point of view.”
“I believe this idea is entirely valid, and I will explain why…”
Avoid long, generic openings—they don’t add value and won’t score extra points.
How Section B Is Evaluated
Your writing will be assessed on several criteria, including:
Relevance and connection to the topic
Depth and structure of arguments
Logical flow and text coherence
Sentence construction and vocabulary use (accuracy, range, relevance)
Spelling and punctuation
Which TEF Exams Include the News Item Task?

Tips from TEFCanada.ca
✅ Don’t waste time on formal formatting—an official letter structure is unnecessary.
✅ Avoid broad, pre-written intros or conclusions—evaluators disregard them.
✅ Focus on building a strong personal argument with specific examples.
