Planning to take the TEF exam soon and want to get ready for the oral comprehension section? You’re in the right place!
What to Expect on Test Day
The oral comprehension section lasts 40 minutes and includes 40 questions based on real-life situations such as public announcements, conversations, interviews, and radio segments. Here’s the breakdown:
- 4 questions based on illustrated conversations
- 4 questions from public announcements
- 6 questions from street interviews
- 2 questions from radio reports
- 6 questions from interviews
- 1 question based on a report
- 10 questions related to various documents
Each question has multiple-choice answers (list or drop-down menu), but only one is correct. You earn 1 point per correct answer. There are no penalties for incorrect or unanswered questions.
Important: Stay focused! You’ll hear each audio clip only once — no replays or going back. The audio starts automatically, so listen closely and respond as the test progresses.
👉 Pro tip: Read the question and answer choices before the audio starts. Select the best answer—even if you’re unsure—and move on. Once you confirm your answer, you can’t go back.

How to Prepare for the Oral Comprehension Test
The goal of this section is to evaluate your ability to understand spoken French—both the message and its meaning.
To improve, regularly expose yourself to varied French audio content: music, podcasts, radio, audiobooks, videos, etc. This helps train your ear and boosts your overall comprehension.
Focus on:
Understanding general context
Picking out key information (keywords, dates, places, numbers)
Expanding your vocabulary
The more you listen, the more confident you’ll be on test day.
💡 Use the official tutorial, prep workshops, and practice materials to get familiar with the test format.
